It basically blocks ips that are logged on a list somewhere. The theory is that unwanted ips are then unable to access your torrent client.

I've used BTguard for years with no issues. Have received only one notice during that time and that was when a roommate decided to try out another torrent client that wasn't configured properly. Money well spent and BTguard offers an easy to setup configured utorrent that only asks for login and password during install.
